Greenwell Star Football club were formed at the end of the 1983/84 football season.

At that particular time theHistory then owner of the Tutor Inn had decided to sell up and the future of the football club was uncertain. A meeting was held with the late Willie John Garrett and Lester McBurney and it was agreed that the new club would be based in the Castle Garden Arms, now better known as The Pub. The new club would be called Greenwell Star and to this day they remain based at the same establishment.

In July/August of 1984 a committee was formed to run the club and they appointed Junior Taggart as the First manager of the Club.

Greenwell Star applied and were accepted into the County Down Premier League and after a series of friendly matches were ready to compete in serious competition.

The first match took place on Saturday 1st September 1984 against Movilla Rangers and was played at  Ormeau Park in Belfast,

losing by 7 -3

The Team sheet for that historic match read as follows. Tommy Orr, Audie Blair, Peter Whitla, Gordon Finney, Robert Cash, Roland McBratney, Junior Taggart, Jimmy McCullough, Alan Irvine, Tom Paton, Whitey Johnston, James McDade, Stephen Rollo and Mervyn Bittles       Most of these players went on to have long and distinguished careers with the club.

Greenwell were promoted n that first season and at the awards night Roland Mc Bratney was Player of the Year, with Audie Blair

Players player of the year, and John Taggart  Top Goalscorer.

In their second season Greenwell finished mid Table of the Premier division most notable for the appearances of Stewart Beattie

who was unable to play in the amateur league having previously competed in the Irish League, and on one occasion maaged a double hat-trick.

The following season saw Greenwell accepted into the Down Area Winter Football League (DAWFL) A new management

team of Harry McBratney and Richard Bloomer took over and attracted a lot of new players to the club who had also formed a reserve team. Players like Peter Rutherford, colin Adair, David Cash, Michael Murphy, Billy reilly,Sam McCord, James Dorrian and David McBratney ( who once scored 15 goals in 2 consecutive matches..) Greenwell reached their first final during this period, beating Ardcarnet and a very good Tudor team to reach the final of the McCaw Shied only to lose out to Ards Blues, the final being played at Clandeboye Park.

Success for both teams continued with the First team winning the Supplementary Cup and gaining promotion to the Premier League, with the Seconds guided by Alan Irvine victorious in the Reserve Team Cup in the same season. More players of note

were, Davy Boyd, William Perry, Lindsey, kyle and Owen Spiers, Warren Patton, Billy Noble, Alec Cash, Bill Taggart, Gerald Bell, Stephen Connery, Michael Dunn and Stephen Crawford who all played their part.  however all good things don't last and the club went into decline with the first team being relegated.

Jimmy Menagh took over following Harry McBratneys decision to stand down, thus leading on to the next golden period for

the club. Promotion in the 1st season followed by 2 league titles, 1 Billy Allen Shield, 1 Sittlington Cup, and 1 Supplementary Cup the Reserves also perfomed well with David Rainey leading them to several successful league and cup campaigns.

Joining jimmy were Neville Phillips and  Alec Robson, Greenwell became one of the major forces in Junior football with players like Drew McGhee, Colin Smyth, John Smyth, Mark Henderson, Ian Davidson, Alan McVeigh, Craig Robson, Ricky Milligan, Johnny Rea, Davy Campbell, Roy Murray, Gary menagh, Bendy Foster, julian Creaney, Simon Creaney, Walter George, Barry Graham, and Davy Harris and you can see the attaction of Menaghs team.

Jimmy was probably the victim of his own success, and after much soul searching left to manage Shorts in the Amateur League, unfortunately taking most of the players with him in mid season left the club with a big hole to fill. Norman Crozier stepped in to the hot seat and guided the club through to the end of the season.  He was unable to bring the new blood required the following season and David Rainey stepped up from the 2nds, again unable to re-establish the team, James McDade took over the reins and added another Supplementary Cup to the Honours list, along with a reserve team cup in previous seasons. James continued for a couple of seasons before Peter Rainey took over.  Then in his second Season along with Sammy Spiers and a remarkable group of players created history in the DAWFL becoming the first club to win the TREBLE with both teams in the 1 season.
